I realized when I went to start the mower that it is broken and is in need of some attention from my husband, so I tackled the garden.
I should have taken a before picture so you could see just how bad it looked. Even now it doesn't look good. In the picture you can't really see all the weeds. The big yellow thing you see is a yellow squash, only I think it looks more like a yellow zucchini.
This is the pile of weeds, mostly
the weed from H-E-double hockey sticks morning glory. As you can see my grass is so long it nearly covers the weeds. We only have a couple of pumpkins so far. The first year we had a garden the pumpkins nearly took over the garden. Last year we didn't get any.
This plant, which happens to be the biggest in the garden, came up all on it's own. Meaning, we didn't plant it. It started growing outside of the garden even. We were curious as to what it would turn into.
We think that it is a cross between a yellow squash and an acorn squash. Somebody was staying warm in the garden during the winter. I'm just sayin....
Sadly, I don't have the bounteous harvest of Zucchini that I've had in the past so I can't shred it and freeze it and then throw it away next year because I didn't do anything with it. Maybe I can actually use the small amount of zucchini I have this year.

15 people have something to say:
Lovely Garden! I can smell it. I love the smell of a garden, it reminds me of my grandma.
I can't wait to have me own. That is the most Zucchini lookin squash, or is it Squash lookin' Zucchini I've ever seen.
I love the bit about freezing/saving then tossing. That's sort of how I roll, too. (hanging head in shame)
PJ: Thank you! I've really enjoyed our garden!
elizabeth: Somehow I feel less guilty that way. I know it's crazy!
So you say that there was some hanky panky going on in your garden over the winter? ;) You'd better have a birds and bees talk with those squashes! Or would it be a bees and bees talk? :D
I think your garden looks great! I can't wait to have a garden again next summer. LOL at all that work to preserve the zucchini, just to throw it away. It sounds exactly like something I'd do! LOL!
I wish you didn't live so far away...
Amanda, your garden looks wonderful! We, too, have had several things just "come up" that we never planted. I think it's from our compost.
I made the mistake of planting morning glory (like on purpose! What was I thinking???) in the front yard one year to climb all over the porch. It looked alright, but ever since then there are seedlings EVERYWHERE! I feel your pain!
"I can't shred it and freeze it and then throw it away next year because I didn't do anything with it."
Did you forget about the oodles of zucchini bread that you can give at Christmas time?
Yeah, me too. I have to throw it away when hubby is gone. He freaks if I "waste" food. Which is super funny, because he HATES, hates I say, zucchini. Only me and two of my kiddos eat it. Go figure.
Ooh look at all those squashes.
Squasheses!
Impressive bounty! Our season, sort of stopped....at a stand still I guess...so I can catch up on other things. Whew!
I am impressed Amanda!! Wow!
I LOVE fresh garden veggies. They are the best.
Where did you get your Edward Cullen sign? I need one.
suzanne: That is what I'm sayin! I miss you too! :)
nikko: Ack, planting morning glory on purpose?!? I'll gladly give some of mine away!
kayelyn: I know, I know, that is what I am supposed to do with it. I just don't. :( Are you saying your husband doesn't like zucchini? ;)
NCS: LOL, squasheses!
sodak: If you would like to drive to Rapid I will share! :)
tori: Thanks, but don't be. I do very little but pick and eat, or as already mentioned, throw it away.
utmommy: Yes, fresh from the garden veggies are the best! Love it!
Tori helped me with the cool Edward blinkie, isn't she sweet!
Looks like enough vegetables to start your own Veggie Tales production!
Your garden is simply beautiful! I am so jealous. Your pumpkins! How fun!
Hannah and I planted a garden for one of her YW projects about faith. It has not done well at all. I think there must be a spiritual thought there along the lines of preparation....
Wow! Very cool garden!
