Meet (from left to right) Rachel, Bald Chicken (if you look closely you can see his bald spot), Sally Crystal Angel (yes, that is one name), and Sonny. It is the hope that in a matter of a few short months that these chicks will give us eggs. That is if they don't all turn out to be roosters. We also have more chickens that are scheduled to hatch and arrive in our home in a couple of weeks (I won't tell you how many because I don't want anyone to think we've gone completely mad!). Hopefully all of them aren't roosters either. (As my husband put it, "you can't just lift up their leg and look to see if they are a boy or girl.") Hopefully our neighbors will find this as amusing as my friend Kendra did when I told her the other day that my husband was in the back yard building a chicken coop.
No, we haven't gone completely crazy. My husband actually grew up on a farm and raised all sorts of creatures from chickens to cows. In reality, if we had anymore property, we would have a cow too. There is wisdom in our seeming madness. With the price of everything going up, Scott has been feeling the need to find ways to save money. Some people clip coupons or tighten their budget. No, not us, we go out and buy chickens so we don't have to pay the outrageous price for eggs at the grocery store. Not to mention that when we decide that boneless, skinless, chicken breasts are too spendy, we can just kill our own. Unfortunately, if we want them boneless and skinless (and featherless) we'll have to do that ourselves. I think I'll be calling in sick that day.
Another reason behind the chickens is to give our children more responsibilities. We wouldn't want our kids to be bored this summer. Instead they will have a chicken coop to clean and if all goes well, by fall they will have eggs to collect. They are all really excited. That is because they have never come face to face with a rooster before. As for me, I have. I still remember the chickens and roosters we had when I was growing up. Sure it was fun at first watching the little chickies grow and then to collect their eggs. I also still remember the day when my Dad had finally had enough of the mean, nasty, ankle biting roosters and he, uh, took care of them.
So stay tuned for our feather brained adventures. I'm sure we'll have plenty to share, eggs too.
In other bird news. I swear the birds sit on top of our roof and wait until my husband leaves for work and then they "accidentally" fall into our chimney and wind up in our fireplace because it never happens when he is home! It happened again this morning. I heard rustling in the fireplace. Only this time I neglected to open a window first before opening the fireplace door. It flew around the family room hitting the window a couple of times before I could finally get the window open. I'm sure it had a good laugh with it's buddies after they were reunited. "Man that lady sure can scream loud. hahahahahahahaha".

WOW! Chickens! I think that that is a great idea. Especially since you have kids to take care of them. My Ex-Step Mom has chickens and my kids love them.
See this girl who DID NOT grow up on a farm would think all you had to do was "lift up their leg and take a look" ; ) I love the names that were picked out.
With everything that is going on in the world, I think you are very smart.
How fun! I think getting chickens is a great idea! When we were growing up there was a family we were all friends with who had, at different times, chickens, a lamb and probably other animals. I remember that they sometimes had brown chicken eggs and that was FASCINATING to me. What good experiences you are giving your kids!
You make me laugh!! But I competely agree and understand....things are getting a little scary these days. I want to be out of this crazy place and back to the midwest before more stuff starts happening. Get my drift?
You get all the fun. Now you need to read 'Chickens in the Headlights' by Matthew Buckley and compare you summer with his.
Good luck!!
We had chickens when I was a kid, and I'd have them if we had more land. They were fun.
That is a funny pet!
Pollos!
:) The chicks came before the eggs.
:>
It is so funny to put the egg shells back in the chicken coup. One at at time. Then the chickens fight over them. Aaaaah childhood memories.
What cute pets.
You know some of the chicken were also mean. The chased us. We ran.
I think that's a great idea. Eggs cost WAY too much!!
Would you really have a cow??
Have fun with all your chickens! The price of eggs really has skyrocketed lately. I totally couldn't feather and skin the chickens either. That's what hubbies are for, right? :)
BTW, I love your new blog look! So bright and cheery!
That's great! We'll be getting some soon too, I hope. My kids have had the opportunity of that at Grandma and Grandpa's Flake last summer while living there. We moved out just as they started laying. It's a good experience for kids.
mary p. - It will be fun, I hope. :)
yvonne, my husband has been freaking out just a wee bit with everything going on. I think it has been good for him to feel like he can do something about it.
mary: The other day my kids were talking about how brown chicken eggs come from "real chickens". Like the ones from the store come from fake chickens. lol
boedee: Head on back to our neck of the woods. :)
jody: Fun?!? We'll see. ;) I actually read that book a few months ago. It was pretty hiliarious. Jordan read it too and has been talking about chicken gravy. Ewwww.....
pj: We only live on 1/3 acre. I guess that is bigger than most. They so far have been great pets. Except for the constant pooping, and the smell.
NCS: But where did the chicks come from? ;)
klin: I'm sure my kids will learn that chickens aren't always cute and fluffy!
tori: Yes, in a heart beat if we had to room for one. That is my husband's dream.
suzanne: There are guts and gizzards and necks and feet and...doesn't sound like much fun to me. I like my chicken prekilled, precut and prepackaged. ;)
shawna: Thanks for stopping by! :) It has been a lot of fun for the kids so far. Are you guys getting any other animals?
Wow! Can't wait to see all kinds of pictures and eggs!!!
Wow, what an adventure you have ahead of you! Can't wait to hear more about it;)
