An ode to chocolate

Sweet, delectable chocolate. Oh, how I love thee. Let me count the ways....
  • Peanut M&M's
  • Mr. Goodbar
  • Junior Mints
  • hot chocolate with marshmallows and/or coffee Mate Vanilla Chai Spice flavoring
  • Twix
  • chocolate milk - mmmmmm rich, chocolaty ovaltine
  • Fudge
  • chocolate chip cookies
  • no-bake chocolate cookies
  • Hershey's kisses
  • Cadbury's creme eggs
  • Dove
  • chocolate chocolate donuts from Dan's bakery
  • rocky road ice cream
  • Okay, who am I kidding? I am really not a chocolate snob. I will eat chocolate in pretty much any shape or form.

The question was asked, why give up chocolate? It might have something to do with the chocolate I have hiding in my sock drawer.

Or the chocolate I have hidden in my fridge.

I do try to limit how much chocolate I eat, but I thought I would try an experiment. I figured maybe if I gave up chocolate for 3 months that maybe I would notice a difference on the scale. I can't very well substitute other sweets to make up for not eating chocolate, so I am trying to cut back on them too. Besides all that, I wanted to prove to myself that I do have sufficient willpower to accomplish such a feat. I want to prove to myself that I can do it. Plus, that i-pod my husband promised me if I could give up chocolate for 3 months, will be really nice to have when I go to the gym.

Tomorrow marks one week (it would have been yesterday, except I ate those brownies at book club last Saturday) since I started my chocolate challenge. I haven't touched my super secrety stash of chocolate, but I have asked my husband to please take care of them for me so I don't have to resist each time I put on a pair of socks or get out a gallon of milk. The only slip up I've made was when I accidentally had some chocolate milk on Monday.

It hasn't been as hard as I thought it would be. I haven't experienced any shaking or sweating or unusual behavior that might be associated with giving up an addiction. Though I have walked around the kitchen muttering, "I need chocolate" at least once or five times twice in the last week.

20 people have something to say:

You go girl! You can do it... my weakness is Diet Coke and I haven't had one in a week so I can totally feel your pain.

OK. I have some really weird associations. The old Ovaltine commercials "Drink your Ovaltine!" only make me picture evil Mary Poppinesque women forcing giant servings of medicine on big spoons down childrens' throats. I told you it was weird. Even weirder is the association I have with Gloria Gaynor's I Will Survive. I was on my high school winter drumline and at those competitions they also had winter color guard. Our rival high school's JV Color Guard did their routine to that song. Imagine all the fat (I'm fat so I can make fun!) freshmen and sophomore girls rolling around on the gym floor in black and hot pink spandex cowgirl uniforms doing those awful "sexy" moves. I swear this will make me sound so mean...but beached whales. See, know you see the nasty side of me. If you go to my wife's blog and click on the one true media stuff you can find old movies from the summer where I am swimming with the girls in the yard and at the beach. Feel free to make all the great white whale jokes you like!

That said, I eat too much chocolate. I just ate a whole batch of chocolate chip cookies so they wouldn't tempt my wife. There is a reason I am no longer the 165 I was when I finished high school. I am married to that reason!

Reading your post I am starting to ask myself if I should try to give up chocolate or maybe ice cream, my equally as bad a vice for a short period. Then I think, nah. Maybe I need a good reward... I'd do it for a minivan.

Wow. Best of luck to you. The iPod is a good incentive, though. But the Dove dark chocolate...sigh...I think that is what heaven is partially made of.

Rocky Road is my favorite ice cream, I don't buy it often...or else I would eat it often!

What did that Dori fish say on Finding Nemo..."Just keep swimming, Just keep swimming"

Hi Amanda,
I loved your "ode to chocolate"! I have never laughed so hard. I'm not laughing at you, but because I have felt the same way when I tried to give up chinese food for a month. It never happened, I'm too weak! Good luck to you! I know you are a stronger woman than me!

Oh, this would be so so hard for me! Good luck! Everyone in the family has an i-pod but me...I'm not sure I could do what you are doing to get it.

Umm, we are twins in the chocolate issue. I was nodding yes to all of the chocolate things you love.

Hidden in teh sock drawer? That is just awesome.

I had some Dove and thought of you today. Mostly because the inside of the wrapper said, "Sing along with the elevator music" and I thought, "what a dumb idea. For a wonderful piece of tasty chocolate, you sure give lousy advice."

And then I realized, that is why you gave up the chocolate. It is because of the cheesy things they have on the inside of the wrappers, isn't it. Like "when two hearts race, they both win." Yeeech.

So how is it going, anyway? Still holding out?
