The last week has been a little crazy around here. I have really been neglecting blogging lately and I apologize for not reading and/or commenting on many blogs. I feel bad writing on my blog and having people visit and comment when I am not reciprocating. I believe in sharing the love and I am not doing my part to share. Sorry.
With that said, I don't see much changing in the near future. I started something last week that is going to occupy nearly all of my spare (and not so spare) time for the next several months. For several years Scott and I have talked about the possibilities of me working from home or going back to work when the kids were older. Personally, for my family and our circumstances, I've never liked the idea of going back to work. It just doesn't feel right to me and yet I haven't come across the perfect at-home-job either.
I have been interested in medical transcription for a long time now and I have always thought that it was something that I would enjoy and something I could do from home. 8 years ago when Scott was off work for 10 months after his accident I enrolled in a program that would supposedly train me to be a MT. It turned out to be a scam (like most at-home-jobs are) and a waste of time and money. After that I was hesitant to pursue it any further.
Then a few months ago I met a friend who just happened to be a Medical Transcriptionist. Unfortunately she was preparing to move at the time and I didn't feel it was the time or place to be asking her about becoming a medical transcriptionist. I knew it was still possible to be an MT I just wasn't sure the best way to go about doing it. A couple of weeks ago I finally decided to email my friend and ask her. I am so glad I did. She encouraged me to go ahead and get training either through a tech school here in town or online. Since that email I have searched the Internet, researching various online schools as well as the program offered locally to find out which one is the best for me and my circumstances. For the first time since we have talked about me getting a job I feel comfortable and at peace about it.
Last Friday I started my training with Careerstep.com . I am a week into my training with at least 20 more weeks to go. My goal is to finish in June. Since it is an online course I can take it at my own pace. If all goes according to my plan I should be able to be done with training and start working by the time school starts this fall. I am excited for the opportunity to have a job working from home and still maintain the flexibility of being a SAHM. I love the thought of working, but not having to worry about what to do with the kids when they are out of school or sick or whatever.
So, that is where I am going to be spending the majority of my time for the next several months. As well as trying to find a balance between studying, taking care of my family and my home, not to mention my calling at church. Sheesh! Could I add one more thing to my plate? ;)
If any of you are at all interested in learning more about becoming a MT or what an MT even is, feel free to ask and I will share with you what I have learned. I would love to share any advice or information that I can. The company I signed up with is currently offering some great deals to sign up before the end of January, so if you are interested now is a great time!

20 people have something to say:
Congratulations on your big step, Amanda! Now I feel badly that I didn't ask more yesterday. This truly is a big one, huh? I am not to that "place" yet, so I commend you for taking the plunge and feeling at peace about it. I'll keep you in my prayers, and in the meantime know that I am just up the road if you ever need a playmate for Meghan or need to get away for a little while for some girl-time. I could use it myself. ;0)
I'm proud of you.
Kendra
I think it is great that you have found an opportunity to do something you can feel good about, and still be there for your family.
Don't worry too much about not being able to blog as often. I have found that blogging ebbs and flows. We'll still be here when you need us!
And it's not a huge Church calling or anything, is it? :)
I've thought about that. Let me know how you like it, and thanks for adding the link - I may go check it out.
I still lurk but have been terrible about leaving comments the last little while. I guess we all know where to find each other, right? :)
Congrats and good luck! That is what I was going to school for before I found out about my cancer and decided that I didn't need to have a trade anymore (yipee). I hope Careerstep.com works out for you, but if for any reason it doesn't, check out Williston State College up in ND. You can get a certificate or an associates degree in MT. I think you'll have fun with the classes. It's kind of fun knowing "doctor language."
I got caught in one of those scams years ago. They suck. I don't remember what I did after I got my money back, or my bank took it from them and gave it back to me, but I ended up in school a couple years after that.
We'll watch for whatever crumbs you can throw us. The "hey, I'm still alive" kind are more than acceptable.
I was a secretary and worked for some doctors. I then took a second job as a medical transcriptionist--because I worked for the doctors I had "on the job training". There were lots of opportunities out there--I hope this works out for you and it's something you enjoy.
Good luck.
I'm totally interested!! I worked from home for 16 years and had to leave that job because it was killing me! I keep joking that I'm going to go out and get a government job so I can have all the awesome benefits, but I don't want to work during the summer when my kids are home....so I would love more info. I need to do something!! So fill me in when you can-in between being the RS pres and taking care of many cute kids, etc. etc.!!! ;) Good luck, too!!!
My friend did that for a few years:)
I'm glad you found something that works for you and your family.
Good luck!
Good for you! That is something I've always thought would be fun to do, I started taking some classed leaning that way and got married and kids started and that's about all that's happened. I'm very interested to see how it goes. Good luck!
Wow Amanda. That's awesome. I have often wondered about MT but didn't know where to start due to scams, etc... Thank you so much for this info. and GOOD LUCK!
Good luck with all your training! I'm glad that you've been able to find something that works for you. I've often thought about trying to do a job at home that I could do on the computer. But until I'm done with school, I can't fit one more thing onto my plate.
Please keep us updated with how it's going! And no worries about not posting/commenting as much. I don't think it's possible we could love you any less! :)
What a great idea! I'm totally impressed. You already know the lingo, so this should be perfect!
Sometimes I have blog guilt and don't post because I'm not able to read or comment on friends blogs. Then I remember that I'm really blogging for myself as a journal, and I kick myself and write a little about our lives and skip the guilt.
You are so awesome!! That's great, I am so happy for you :D
Now, remember we are Blogging Without Obligation (insert date here) no need to apologize, your real life come first.
YAY!!!
I will probably be talkig to you on Sunday, I too had a friend who did this and has done this for years! She was able to do it with two young children, I was never able to ask her about it. So I'll be in touch
Good for you. I had no idea you were doing this. As if you weren't busy enough. Good luck. Sounds like a great job. Let me know how it works out!
Your new adventure sounds fulfilling and exciting! Good luck with it!
good for you! nothing better than doing something that helps you learn something new. sometimes we do so much for our families, we forgot taking care of ourselves and sometimes that includes something as simple as taking a class or course.
I too have not been so good about posting frequently. I'm also doing online courses. It takes time, but I find it fulfilling. If I keep it up the way I've been going going, I'll graduate in 2015! I wish it was June like you! MT sounds interesting!
Sounds like a really good job! Good Luck with balancing everything.
I have a friend that has done this for about 5 years and loves it. She is now teaching for the school she attended! Have fun!!!!
