Summer of the Chickens

  • We got the rest of our chickens last Friday. We were supposed to get 25, that was apparently the smallest amount that we could order. We counted them yesterday and it turns out they gave us 27. That makes 31 total chickens. Yeah, my neighbors are going to hate us. Unless we sweet talk them with some eggs.
  • In case you really want to know, they are buff orpingtons. They are really cute and so soft. They also produce a lot more poop and eat a lot faster than 4 chickens. They also require a little bum wiping from time to time. Hey, I thought I was done with the newborn stage for good! At least I dont' have to potty train 30 toddler chickens!

  • We held our first and hopefully last chicken funeral on Wednesday. One of the baby chicks died, bringing our chicken count down to 30.
  • Our other chickens are getting bigger. In case you are wondering, we think these guys are Plymouth Rock Chickens. We are hoping the black ones are not Barred Old English Bantams. Evidently they don't play nicely with other chickens.

  • The chicken coop condo is still a work in progress. I love my husband dearly. He just doesn't know how to do anything simple. By the time he is done this is going to be the finest chicken house around!

  • In other news, I neglected to check in last week with my weekly weigh-in. I did lose a pound last week, but this week I stayed the same. Really I can't expect much seeing as how I have not been to the gym in over a week (5:30 am is just waaaaaay too early for me!). At least I am holding steady, for now. Maybe our season pass to the pool will help.

The chicken coop looks great! My dh doesn't build/design anything simple, either.

You have to wipe their little bums? Don't know how thrilled I'd be about that. ;o)

Whoa! You weren't kidding about the 'condo'!!! Sweet (chicken) pad! :)

I'll agree with you, 5:30 is too early for anything. I don't think there is anything good at that time. ;)

I thought how great this would be until I read about having to wipe their little chicken bums--sorry!!!

The coop looks great.

Congrats on the weight loss. Way to go.

Wowsers! I can't believe how many people I see in blogland who have chickens! Enjoy the poopies!

That's some chicken coop! Wowee!

Forgive me for not remembering, but what are you going to do with 30 chickens? (This is a sincere question by the way) Is this a 4H project, will you sell the eggs, butcher them, or just learn to care for animals? Regardless, I think it's a cool project you have going!

OOOH AAAHHHH chicks! So cute.
Daily Hero and firstborn raised ducks 2 years ago.
They really want to raise chickens, but I'm little tiny bit scared of chickens....unless they are dead, 'cause then they are mighty deliciosos.

Anyway, I'm going to show them your super awesome chicken coop. Maybe if I don't see them I'll be ok.

"Do the chickens have large talons??"

I bet you never thought you'd ever be wiping the butt of a chicken!

nikko: Isn't your husband an engineer! I can't imagine how much worse mine would be if he was....

deanne: They will be the happiest chickens around! I am too busy sleeping at 5:30 am to even think about getting out of bed! ;)

shawna: You can say that again! :)

yvonne: I need to do some explaining about the wiping bums. It wasn't the most pleasant experience, but it had to be done!

mary P.: We are excited to see you in just a few days! You'll love the chickens! lol

lisa: Thanks, I think. ;)

mary: I think I am going to write a post to answer your question. :) Too much to say in a short little comment....

kathleen: It has been so much fun so far. Even the bum wiping! They are so cute and it has been fun to watch them!

NCS: Go for it! It has been a lot of fun so far! My kids are pretty morbid though. Everytime we eat chicken for dinner, which is a lot, they keep saying, "Hey we're eating [insert pet chicken's name]". They think they are pretty funny!

Wendy: Why is it that baby chicks are so cute? The fertilizer will be nice too! They probably will start laying this fall sometime.

Tori: "Do the chickens have large talons??"
Is that a movie quote?? No, I never thought I would be wiping chickens butts! ;)

Wow, now that's dedication to wipe a chicken's butt! And no, I can't think of anything worse that potty training 30 chickens! Your hubby did such a nice job on the "condo"! Guys really do get excited about their projects.

Thanks again for chatting with me today! I really needed it!

Are you sure your husbands not an engineer;)

I love it that you guys are raising chickens. My dad grew up on a farm with chickens and so when we were kids we had pigs, cows, horses, rabbits... but no chickens. I've heard many a story about raising chickens. I can't wait to hear a few from you:)

Wow, great condo. When the chickens grow up and move away, will your kids move in?
I've wanted to raise chickens, but can't talk my husband into it. I love fresh eggs.
