Sun, sand and.....snow

Scott and Jordan have been home from their trip for a couple of weeks now and even though I was not on their trip I wanted to blog about it anyway.

Scott and Jordan left South Dakota to travel to southeastern California, a 3,000+ mile round trip (I had the oil changed in my Suburban the day before they left and by the time they got home it was past the recommended mileage for the next oil change). They were headed to the Imperial Sand Dunes , the largest sand dunes (covering more than 40 miles) in California. Before they got there they first had to drive through parts of Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona. The first day they drove all the way to Scott's parents home in Northern Arizona, a 19 hour drive. The next day they drove to Phoenix, normally a 4 or 5 hour drive. Unfortunately they hit a major snow storm and it took them twice as long to get there.

This is Scott and Jordan with one of Scott's brothers and two of Jordan's cousins.

A little background information. Before I met Scott I assumed that Arizona was a hot, dry deserty place. I had never considered that much of Arizona was covered in thick green forests and that they get large amounts of snow in the winter. I had always thought Snowflake was such a strange name for a town in Arizona. (Actually the name snowflake comes from two families that originally settled in that area. The Snow's and the Flake's) After meeting Scott and actually going to Arizona, I discovered what a beautiful and diverse climate it has. Of course Southern Arizona is hot and dry, but Northern Arizona has a similar climate to where I grew up in Utah.

Back to my travel Scott's travel log, the next day they drove another 4 hours to finish their journey to California. Now the real fun starts:

Taking it all in

My crazy husband

Little specks in the sand

This is my favorite picture from their trip. Poor guy was so tired from his 'hard day' of riding that he fell asleep in front of the campfire.

On the drive home they hit another snow storm. Jordan was more than happy to play in the snow with his cousins.

We were thrilled to have our Daddy and brother back home after being gone for 10 days. Scott came home sporting a beard which I was more than happy to say goodbye to. ;)

All in all it was a great trip for them. Not only did they have a lot of fun, but Scott was able to see and visit all 3 of his sisters and 3 of his 5 brothers (his brother in Idaho and his brother that lives here in SD were not able to make the trip). He was also able to see his parents as well as my Dad and stepmom in Denver. By the time they got home Scott was ready for a vacation from his vacation. So was I. ;)

What fun for those boys! The picture of Scott jumping on the bike (I can't think if there is a correct word for what he's riding) is crazy! That sand makes me want to go to the beach!

(p.s. I like your sparkly background!)

You're a cool wife Amanda.

I love the pics! It's so funny to see sand dunes and snow all on one post. :)

I remember thinking the same thing about Arizona and then driving through Flagstaff and being pleasantly surprised. Hey, I could even live there. ;o)

What a great trip. I'm sure Jordan will have many great memories from it!

What a fun trip! I am totally jealous! Will you please tell my baby in your garage that I miss her? J.K. I've driven through Snowflake before when James and I stayed at a resort in Pinetop. What a beautiful place. It wasn't what I thought Arizona would be like either.

I've always thought the same thing about Arizona too. I would've never known. Sounds like the boys had a great time!

Glad you have your hubby back:)

mary: If they had been going to the beach I think I would have been all over that. A week in the sand otherwise just doesn't seem as fun! ;)

tori: Thanks! I'd like to think that I am a cool wife. :D

nikko: I think I could actually live in Flagstaff too. Very pretty area! Jordan has a lot of great memories indeed!!

NCS: I think it is good I wasn't there. I'd be freaking out, "keep your &%*$@ wheels on the ground!" ;)

elizabeth: I stopped blogging only temporarily. Sadly your blog has gone private! I miss reading your blog!

mary: You will have to come visit now that the weather is getting warmer and you can take her out for a ride! :D Pinetop is especially pretty. One of Scott's brother's lives near there.

utmommy: I'm glad they are back too. :D

kathleen: I love that picture of Jordan too! Scott totally looks way better minus the man hair, plus it is no fun kissing a porcupine! ;)

What a fun trip it must have been for them--I love father son (mother daughter) trips. They are so great.
I hope you had a great time with the girls while they were gone.

Great pictures.

I love these pictures! Looks like fun. How wild for the boys to go through snow and then get to the glorious sun!!!

Off topic--you were kind to send me a link to strike out text long ago. Do you have a link on how to put a link in a comment? I've been looking and so far nothing has spelled it out simple enough for me to understand. :( If not, I will ask around. :) Thanks.
