I heart country music

There was a time in my life when I might have been ashamed to admit that. There was also a time in my life when I pretended to hate country music because I thought I wouldn't be cool if I admitted that I kind of liked country music. Then I met my husband and he loves country music. It just sort of became my thing after that. Of course I like more of the newer, catchier songs than the older twangy songs.

Have you heard the joke, "What do you get when you play a country song backwards? Your dog back, your girl back, your house back....." Yeah, I know there are plenty of sappy, twangy silly country songs out there, but I like it anyway.

Don't get me wrong, I do like other music. In high school I used to listen to Erasure, Depeche Mode, REM, U2, red hot chili peppers and more - I never listened to country. After high school I listened to Blues Traveler, Alanis Morisette, Sheryl Crow and Counting Crows, to name a few. Some days I still switch my radio station over to the hear 'the oldies'. I am so clueless as to what is new nowadays unless it is country.

After I met Scott and I embraced my love for country music, some of my favorites were Garth Brooks and Tim McGraw. Garth Brooks' song Shameless was definitely written about Scott. He is shameless when it comes to loving me. :) Lately my favorites are Brad Paisley, Kenny Chesney and Rascal Flatts. I also love Martina McBride, Alison Kraus, Sara Evans and Jodee Messina, oh and I do like Carrie Underwood too.

As much as I do love country music there are some country songs that I just can't stand. Like this one for instance:
I'll wait for you - by Joe Nichols
The snow in Montana was three feet high
The lady at the counter said: There ain't no flights
And so he called her on the telephone
He said: I'll rent a car and I'll drive home
And she said: I'll wait for you
Like I did last year
At Christmas time with your family here
And your truck broke down out in San Antone
And the gifts stayed wrapped until you got home
Oh, this ain't nothin' new
Sweetheart, I'll wait for you
Now he's on his cell phone in a Coupe Deville
Talkin' to the one he loves and always will
His heart is breakin' 'cause she's there alone
Her heart is achin' 'cause she wants him home
She says: I'll wait for you like in 68'
When our child was due, but I said, he'll have to wait
Until his dad gets here and stands by my side
Remember, Dear, our son's first cry
Oh, this ain't nothin' new
Sweetheart, I'll wait for you
He didn't stop all day to eat a bite
And he finally got there around midnight
The doctor said, she's in a better place
She said to give you this note just in case
And it said, I'll wait for you at Heaven's gate
Oh, I don't care how long it takes
And I'll tell Saint Pete I can't come in
Without my love and my best friend
Oh, this ain't nothin' new
Sweetheart, I'll wait for you
P.S. I love you, too
Sweetheart, I'll wait for you

Somebody has got to teach this man a lesson in priorities. He nearly misses the birth of his son, he is late for Christmas and leaves his wife to deal with his family, and he isn't even there when his wife dies. Poor lady! The chorus should go "Oh, this ain't nothin' new, you're always late".
Anyway, I do love me some good country music. Country music is full of heart and soul and meaning, and I love being able to sing along. There are so many country songs that I love. So as of today, I am announcing Country Music Monday. I will be highligting some of my favorite artists and their music. Today is Kenny Chesney day. I picked him because we went to a wedding and reception on Saturday and they kept playing his song, "Me and You". I love it!
So turn up your speakers and enjoy some great country music, or if you'd rather not, that is fine too. No hard feelings! :D

I also didn't always admit to liking country while growing up! LOL! When I finally did, I had fun getting to country line dance at a local place with friends. I've never heard that Joe Nicols song before, but it doesn't look like I'm missing much! LOL! Yay for Country music Monday! :)

I love Rascall Flatts' Backwards Country song! I don't listen regularly, but I love the old stuff and the new stuff - I grew up on the old. Sometimes the songs are funny and I enjoy that, too!

It's nice to have a love for a variety of music. Good for you.

I've been there, in love with country music. I've gone back and forth in the past 13 years or so. At present I'm in 'forth' mode and actually I don't listen to much of anything. If I do have the radio on it is tuned to the local KLOVE station....but it gets super fuzzy when I go into the Target parking lot so I end up turning it off b/c it annoys me! So, anyway, I appreciate County music, but it's been awhile since I've felt the love.

I used to listen to "Cryin' Lovin' and Leaving" at nite on the country station. But that's about all the songs I know- from like the early 90's. Love songs.

I really like the older stuff, like Kenny Rogers and Johnny Cash. Not enough to buy it, but enough to listen to it sometimes.

My parents played hippie music, my grandparents danced to The Judds, Vince Gill and the old stuff.

My husband LOVES classic Country. I have a soft spot in my heart for country music.

These day I'm usually listening to soft pop from the 80s 90s and today.

Great post! :)

If it ain't country, It ain't music. Unless it's rock 'n roll or some other song that I am enjoying.

I do like Rascall Flats. Did I spell that right?

I love all kinds, of music, Country included.

I love that you have embraced it. *Grin* I have felt that same way.

I too DESPISE this song.

I'm currently crunching on the Brad Paisley "On Line" song, which for some reason makes me laugh!

( I usually don't like those kind)

COUNTRY? I have to admit, I am not much of a country-lover. Not that that means anything to anyone ever--wynne doesn't listen to country? Who cares? She's weird anyway.

However, I do like to hear Garth Brooks sing that one line "I got friends in
LOW
places..."

How low can you go, Garth? Huh?

And also, Faith Hill and Shania Twain are just too pretty. So pretty it's annoying. Especially Shania and her tummy.

Look here lady, I left you a comment this morning. A funny comment, if I do say so myself. I cannot help it if you make another post the same day I leave a comment on your old post.
I cannot help it.
Nope.
I can't.
So, I guess I just left a comment on your new post.
Even though it has nothing to do with your post.
Happy now?
I do like your blog.
If I didn't, you wouldn't be on my FAVORITES list.
Yes, that's right. YOu're one of my favorites.
You almost rival me in being queen of guilt trips. Sheesh. I thought I had the market on that. ;)

my name is wendy and I like country music. Until about 2 weeks ago the only country music you could find over here was a fuzzy AM station....

Today as I was taking hannah to the ortho to get a wire fixed, she was flipping the radio dial and found our new country station. A familiar song was playing and it took us right back to Rapid City...

ps - Nathan does not really like recent country songs, but he loves Johnny Cash

suzanne: line dancing is one thing I've never done. I think it would be fun.

lisa: I like some of the funny songs too! Rascal Flats is one of my very favorites.

yvonne: That was a nice way of saying that you don't like country music. That's okay, we can still be friends. ;)

deanne: Hopefully I can help you feel the love again. :)

tori: I like the 'love songs' aspect of country.

millie: My parents were Kenny Roger's fans. He is okay, my husband likes Johnny Cash.

pj: If I'm not listening to country is is usually soft rock too. The best of the last 30 years. ;)

kayelyn: The big sis has got it going on...you are too cute! :D

lisa m.: I really like that Brad Paisley song! I will be putting that on my blog soon! :D

wynne: I don't really care for Shania, Faith is okay. I'm not such a huge fan of Garth anymore...

carrot: Take a deep breath and calm down. ;) I still love you, even if you don't like country music.

elizabeth: I refrained from posting a picture of Kenny on my blog. I like his music, not necessarily him. I'm just sayin. ;)

kathleen: Yay, you know what I mean! :D

wendy: I'm so glad that you found a good country station! Now it is truly paradise in Hawaii. :) Scott likes Johnny Cash too. 'Ring of fire......' that is all I know. I did watch the movie though.

I like country music too.....but like with everything....there is good country and bad country. I actually like when they have a quality voice, not just good lyrics. Mister got me into my country music too!

Where is the justice? He should have kicked the bucket first.

My Papi likes honky-tonk knock down drag down brawling bar music. He likes Toby Keith the most. I like the softer side of country music. That does not include Tim or Faith. Gah, I'm so sick of hearing their songs everywhere because they're crossover artists. SICK, I tell you.
