As soon as I got out of the car I smelled gas. I looked under my car to find that I was leaking gas. I tried not to panic as we went to climb the rock. When we were done I loaded up the kids and started the car. The leak got worse. I tried to call my husband on my cell phone, but there was no service available there. I knew something was terribly wrong, but I had no clue what or how to deal with it. I asked a couple of men, mostly tourists, that were at the rest stop there and eventually found a gentlemen who was actually from Casper (about 45 minutes away) and was headed to Rawlins (another hour away) which is where we were headed. After unsucessfully attempting to fix the leak he ascertained that I should not drive any further for risk of endangering myself or my 'precious cargo' (my four children). He continued his drive to Rawlins and sent a tow truck to haul me and the kids in. We ended up spending over 3 hours at Independence Rock before the tow truck made it.
In the meantime we enjoyed watching the approaching storm get closer and closer and then eventually dump rain on us. Fortunately Independence Rock is also a rest stop and there was a place for us to get shelter from the storm. Though my kids were happier playing in the rain. I was happy to watch them from a dry spot! We said a prayer and thanked Heavenly Father that we were not stranded somewhere along the side of the road! We were trully blessed in that nothing serious happened. We were also blessed that we were in a place where we had a bathroom and could get out and play around.
It turns out the problem was with the new fuel filter that we had put on Saturday when we had the oil changed. The
Yesterday we even made it to the Parade, though I was not exactly happy at first when my mom woke me up at 8:00. After the parade, which my kids loved, I got a nap and everyone was much happier! :)

13 people have something to say:
I'm so happy that it wasn't anything more serious than a fuel filter. Thank goodness for helpful, honest people like the man at the rest stop that got the tow truck for you.
Glad you are there safely!
So glad you're safe and sound!!!
hi amanda: so glad you and your precious cargo are okay. safe travels back, take care, kathleen :)
ps. you earned some pioneer "wings" on this trip.
I know the feeling of being stranded on the road during a trip. It is no fun at all. I'm glad you made it there safetly.
Oh No! How scary! You were so far away from anywhere! Once we got stuck in Montana during the fair or something and couldn't find a hotel room and slept a couple hours at a rest stop. We felt all trashy!
John was wide awake, and as he watched big rigs rolling past, he said "when we finish this game, can we go to a hotel?"
I'm glad you are safe now!
I'm glad you guys are safe! Yikes
So happy you are safe. One time my van overheated, so I had to pull over with a van full of kids and wait a while to put water in it. I'm telling you, it scarred my 3 year old . Now if I'm stopped at a stop light, he says, "are we stuck?" or "is the car broken?"
hi amanda: are you guys back to your home now all safe and sound? ~God bless ya, kathleen :)
It was so fun getting to meet you, Amanda! I'm hoping we can get together again sometime this week! :D
Amanda- It was fun meeting up with you'all this past saturday. I hope you enjoy your visit. Wishing you a safe and "uneventful" drive home:)
Must be the week for car troubles. I'm so glad you weren't stuck on the side of the road and that you made it safely. You were definately under HIS care.
It was so good to see you again yesterday and your kids are adorable!
I'm so glad you made it safely! How stressful with the car trouble and no sleep on top of that. Heavenly Father was definitely watching over you and your family. It sounds like you kept your cool. I don't know if I could have, especially being without my husband.
Oh and LOL at the *strike* on "morons"! :D
