Our own Book of Mormon reading challenge

Last year when Jordan was baptized, his Daddy gave him a challenge to read the Book of Mormon all the way through by himself. Quite a daunting challenge for an eight year old boy, but he willingly took the challenge. He has gone weeks at a time without reading and we have continually encouraged him to pick up where he left off and keep reading. Scott again challenged him to finish it by his birthday on July 18th. Scott and I both started reading from the beginning earlier this year and have both caught up with Jordan. He is in Alma 19.
This morning I sat down with Jordan and we counted how many chapters and pages were left and how much he would have to read each day in order to finish by his birthday. After figuring it out: 127 chapters and 279 pages, I was a little discouraged thinking that was a lot to have to read for a little boy. He was excited when we figured that if he read 3 chapters or 6 pages a day he could finish by his birthday. He was especially excited when I pointed out that in Moroni there are 6 chapters in 3 pages. His enthusiasm and excitement has returned and I am certain that he can finish by his birthday. Scott and I plan on reading and finishing it with him.

I am so proud of Jordan for taking on this challenge and not giving up. I was 21 years old before I ever finished reading the Book of Mormon all the way through. My kids are much stronger in their understanding and knowledge of the gospel than I was at their ages. What a great blessing it will be to them as they grow older and face greater challenges in this world than I had to as a kid. Kids now a days definitely have to be better well equipped to withstand the evils and troubles in this world. I hope and pray that I am up to the challenge of teaching them of our Heavenly Father and our Savior Jesus Christ so that they will be able to stand strong and firm and immovable in their faith. They are already great examples to me.

What a fun challenge for Jordan! You're right, kids in today's world need to be so much stronger because of the greater and more available temptations. You and Scott sound like such good parents!

I didn't read the BOM until I was a teenager, and even then I don't know how much I truly understood. I'm doing the challenge in my ward to get it done by Aug. 10th, but I'm really behind. I'm hoping to still finish it in time! :)

I'm with you.
We're trying to get my daughter through it by the time she is baptized. (She'll be 8 next August--08). That comes out to a page a day. Some days she read, and some days I read to her. We just started. We've just hit our first Is. chapters (1Nephi 21ish). Lovely. Everyone's eyes glaze over.
It's really about me gettiing into daily habits of scripture study. We've done all the kid versions, and the real deal is harder, I think, for everyone :)

awesome what you are doing and feeling, amanda. i love how you worded your last paragraph. you were meant to be these kids' mom, i am sure of it. and you are doing for them exactly what they need to be inspired and influenced in the Gospel.

~blessings to your family this night, kathleen :)

ps. shortly after i chose our church in may 2005, i set a goal for myself that by the time i was baptized in aug 2005, i would read ALL of the D&C, the Pearl of Great Price, and the Book of Mormon. i made my reading goal, in fact the day of my baptism, i read the last 20-ish pages. it felt really good to do this. i am presently working my way through the Old Testament for my first time. i love our scriptures for we are so blessed to have this guidance in our lives.

Way to go, Jordan! I'm with you, Amanda -- I didn't read through the Book of Mormon all the way by myself till I was a senior in high school. I really hope my kids are more prepared and more schooled in the gospel than I was...

M turns 8 next summer. Maybe if we start now...

I need to take that challenge. I should try to complete it by my next birthday. I think I will. Thanks Amanda!

What a great challenge. I've got to get my older two excited about reading. Maybe we'll have to steal your idea.

That is great that he is reading the book of mormon at such a young age....just imagine how many times he will be able to read it before his mission. Way to go mom in encouraging such a worthwhile activity.

What a cool kid! 3 chapters isn't too much! He can do it!

I push my kids to make the same BOM reading goals, but I'm a poor example. :( You know what motivates them? Being able to know most of the answers in class and sucking up the praise and the glory from their teachers. Pride is bad, but I'll make an exception in this case.

I told Jordan that I had blogged about him reading the book of mormon and how he was inspiring a lot of people. I think that made him feel real good! :D

that is awesome how you told him, amanda! you probably made him feel really happy. my girls have acted all happy (and have even corrected some of my stories) when i tell them i have blogged about something they have done. i just thought of something. would if i threaten them that they have to be good all the time, otherwise i will blog about their bad behavior? ha. naah, just kidding.
