Race day results

Sorry it has taken me so long to update you all on the derby results. The race was on Saturday morning. It was all quite exciting. I think that Scott was more nervous than Jordan was. Before the race they have to do a weigh in. The cars are not allowed to weigh more than 5 oz. Scott was prepared to add or remove weight if necessary. He made exhaust pipes on each side of the rear of the car. If he needed to add more weight he had a little metal tube all ready to insert inside one of the exhaust pipes. Sure enough the weight was just barely below 5 oz so he added the extra metal tubing.

There was quite a collection of cars. There were 18 boys and cars in all.

They ran a bunch of races. Only one of the three tracks is timed, so in order to be fair they raced each car on the timed track (the middle track) four times. Then they figured out the average time for each car.

No surprise my nephew Talbot was the overall winner. He is the last of Roy's 4 boys to race in the pinewood derby. I asked Roy if they have won every year. He said yes, with the exception of one year. Which I think he is still bitter about. lol

Jordan's first two runs were very quick and he was holding a close 2nd to Talbot, but the last two runs were slower. Turns out the extra weight that Scott had added in the exhaust pipe fell out. We didn't notice this until we got home. We don't know when or how it fell out or if that is the reason why his times were slower. Jordan placed 3rd among the wolf den (boys age 8) and 4th overall as well as receiving an award for best paint job. Not bad for his first year I think.

Jordan felt bad afterwards, not because he didn't win, but because there were some boys whose cars were so much slower. He felt bad that they didn't win. He is such a sweety. Yesterday while driving home from church he said, "Mom, I don't think I would want to win the pinewood derby every year. I would feel bad for everyone else if I always won, it wouldn't be fair." In my eyes he is the winner.

Jordan did so great! Amanda, you must tell us the secrets now so my boys will have a fighting chance of winning someday! ;)

What a sweet boy! Not all kids think about the feelings of others. That is such a wonderful quality for him to have! :)
