At our December book club get together the book "The Scarlet Pimpernel" was chosen as our book for January. Honestly I was not thrilled with this particular pick and almost didn't read it. I am so glad that I didn't miss out!!
The Scarlet Pimpernel is one of the best books I have read in awhile. It was filled with suspense, romance, and kept me guessing literally to the very end. I have since watched the movie based on the book, which was good on its own, but didn't exactly follow the book. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone interested in a good read. I was hooked by the 2nd chapter and had the entire book read (some 240 pages long) within 24 hours. I couldn't put it down.
In other news, I have had a couple of you ask me to elaborate on what I said about Dreamgirls in a previous post. There was one scene in which Jennifer Hudson's character sang her heart out to the man she loves. I don't want to spoil the movie for anyone so I won't go into details. There was nothing wrong with the scene itself, I just didn't care for the song. It was too long and to over the top for me. Other than that I really did enjoy the movie. If this type of music (R&B) is not to your liking then you probably will not like the movie as it is a musical. Here is a sample of the song that I am talking about.
We saw another movie Friday night. "The Pursuit of Happyness". This movie, based on a true story, was slow going but good nonetheless. It was a little depressing, yet inspiring with a happy ending. It brings you to tears by the end, happy tears, not sad tears.

Note to self: Next time you are at Borders buy the Scarlet Pumpernickle and a large hot chocolate, extra whippped cream.
Thanks for the review! I've seen the Scarlet Pimpernel as a play, but I've never read the book. I'll have to head to the library to get it.
As for the movie, we just don't go to the theater very often. We're waiting for the 3rd Pirates of the Caribbean movie to come out. Maybe I'll get Dream Girls when it comes out on Red Box in a couple of months... :D
I loved the SP, I read it for the first time last summer, glad you stuck it out!
My friend just asked me yesterday if I'd seen the movies. I hadn't even heard of it till then. How lame am I? I guess I'll have to add that one to the long list of must-reads I already have.
The 80's version of the movie of one of Nathan's favorites. I have never read the book - will add it to my list. I'm glad your book club is still going strong!
Whenever I think of the SP, a vision of gay pirates comes to mind.
Sorry :( I guess I'm very wrong about that.
I loved the Pursuit of Happyness. I ususally avoid sad movies/true stories, but I enjoyed this one very much. Bonus: no one died.
