Early Reading Meme

I was tagged by Becca at And together we learn for this fun reading meme. This one was a little difficult for me because, at my advanced age, I have a hard time remembering that far back. :-P.

1. How old were you when you learned to read and who taught you?
I am not sure how old I was when I learned to read. I assume I learned at school mostly, but both my parents are avid readers so I am sure I learned from them too. My Grandma C, who was too sick to do a lot of things, would read to us all the time. I remember sitting up in her bed with her while she read us many children classics poems and short stories. A favorite story that she read to us was, The Five Chinese Brothers.

2. What books do you remember owning as a child?
This is where is gets a little fuzzy. I remember we had a ton of picture books and early readers. My mom also had several books from her childhood that I enjoyed reading. For the life of me though I can't remember any of their names. We also had the Anne of Green Gables series as well as the Laura Ingalls Wilder books. That is all I can recall at the moment.

3. What is the first book you remember buying with your own money?
I don't recall, but as Becca said, it was probably some Baby sitters club or other preteen book that I had to have. It very easily could have been a Beverly Cleary book too as she was one of my favorite author's.

4. Were you a re-reader as a child? If so, what did you read the most often?
Yes, I was a re-reader. I checked out books from the school library all the time and often check them out over and over. I loved Beverly Cleary's Ramona books as well as the Boxcar kids series.

5. What is the first adult book that captured your interest and how old were you when you read it?
What comes to mind is reaching junior high and high school and having a new world of books opened up to me. For instance; To Kill a Mockingbird, The Hiding Place, and The Diary of Anne Frank were all books that we read for school that I really liked. We also read The Grapes of Wrath and the Great Gatsby, these were less than desirable books in my mind.

6. Are there any children's books you passed by as a child and learned to love as an adult?
The only one that comes to mind right now is Goodnight Moon. I don't ever remember reading this book until I had my own children. I know there are probably a plethera of books out there yet to be discovered by me and my children.

This meme has inspired me to work harder at inspiring a love of reading in my children and renew it within myself.

My turn to do the tagging. I tag Fragile Flower and Suzanne.
