Memory Monday - random thoughts on a snowy day

Our winter snowfall this year has been less than desirable. However the last few days we have received some much needed snow. Not a lot, but anything is nice at this point.

This morning we woke up again to snow falling from the sky. This has got me thinking about years past when the lovely white stuff has left it's mark upon the land. Whenever we wake up to a fresh blanket of snow on the ground I always check to see if school has been canceled. It is hard to know when they will and when they won't. I don't ever remember school being canceled because of snow when I was growing up. I do remember once while in middle school leaving school early. The power was out in the middle of the winter which for obvious reasons (heat and light) made school difficult to say the least. They had all the kids in the gymnasium because there were big sky lights in there and we could at least see and our body heat was probably a plus too. They kept us there until around noon and then sent us home. This way they could count it as a school day and we wouldn't have to make it up.

Another time, this time in high school, it was a similar scenario. I can't recall all the details right now. I guess it left less of an impression on my teenaged mind. I just remember it being cold and dark and wondering what was the point of torturing us poor students anyway.

I do remember times when we had lots of snow. I remember my brother, as a young hormone crazed teenager, skiing on top of the bushes in our yard after a big snow storm. I seem to remember him attempting to ski off the top of our roof into the snow bank below, which given the amount of snow wasn't that far from the roof of the house. Yeah, this same brother is now a physics and chemistry teacher. Go figure!

When I was a little girl we moved from Salt Lake City, Utah to Vernal, Utah. We moved into our house in the middle of winter. It was a particularly bad winter with lots of snow, deep snow. That spring we were quite surprised to find many "treasures" buried under the snow that we didn't know were there when we moved into the house. Among the treasures, mostly trash, we found a bathtub.

Another, more recent memory. My husband, who still likes to drive to an empty parking lot to do donuts in the snow, thought it would be fun to drive his little Nissan Sentra through the snow bank in our driveway. Let's just say it took a week, plus warmer temperatures, plus a really nice wife digging a little each day to get the car out of said snow bank. I was without a car to drive until his car thawed out of the large ice block he deposited it in, just for fun. Luckily he married a sweet wife with a sense of humor.

I only remember a couple of snow days growing up, but it was so fun to miss school. LOL at your hubby putting the car into the snow bank! I guess some things guys never grow out of!

I haven't heard Hazy Shade of Winter in years. I love the Bangles! :D

My husband got a little snow-happy too. He liked to do donuts in the church parking lot (when it was empty). And one morning, when coming home from the gym, he decided to try a new braking/turning technique he'd heard from a co-worker....the trick was to pull up on the emergency brake and it would cause the car to slide into its turn. I awoke to the sound of a car sliding and hitting the curb! Everything was fine, we still laugh about it today, but it could have been dangerous! Men. :)

Nathan always liked to "test" the breaks while driving down scary hills.

I hope you get some good snow.

ps - no snow days in California when I was a little girl, but we did have a few late starts because of the fog!

suzanne, it seemed like the proper song for a snowy day.

deanne, lol. It must be a testosterone (sp?) thing.

wendy, that is funny. I used to do brake checks on my friends in high school. My friends so didn't appreciate it. I was only looking after their well being.

mary, yes it was only a little funny at the time. I think it was actually 2 weeks before the snow melted enough for us to move the car.

He he! Burying the car in the snow bank :) that's hilarious. Don't know why but it reminded me of the ceiling fan saga, your hubby is good for comedy gold.
No snow in Mexico, first time I saw any was Mt. Ashland, skiing with my friends (at 16), good times.

Snow days were something we prayed for when I was in school, and sometimes...I STILL find myself praying for them! :D
Donuts (or as I like to call them: cookies) scare me silly!! Dh thinks it's funny to do them too, but I get white-knuckled and extremely panicky when he tries!! LOL that the car was buried in a snow bank!! I would have been so MAD, but that's why YOU'RE married to your dh!! :)
